GOSPORT SOCIETY NEWS & UPDATES FOR YOUR DIARY- JANUARY 2024
Dear Gosport Society Members,
Since our last Update in December, there has been several news worthy items which Gosport Society has been involved , as follows.
Heritage Action Zone Project 10 – Browndown Trenches
A Heritage England Report has been completed (80 Page report)
Titled – Browndown Ranges (North) Gosport Hants.
Analytical Earthwork Survey and Aerial Investigation and Mapping.
Authors Olaf Bayer, Fiona Small and Mark Bowen.
The investigations and report go into considerable detail and have many historical ariel photograghs. Together with the on-site investigations proving without doubt that Browndown is one of the finest examples of WW 1 trench training facilities.
Being a somewhat involved report, it is not possible to print here in full, however, attached is a copy of the aims of the report and its conclusions. (Those with Emails see following details).
Thanks, must be attributed to the former Conservation Officer at GBC, Rob Harper, his interest in this project and persistence has resulted in proving Gosport has yet another historical asset, that may in time be another source of attracting tourism to Gosport. (Currently the MOD still retain the site).
Gosport Society Publications
We are pleased to report that sales at the Tourist Information Office have resulted in helping fund our activities, the sum of £96.50, in addition, royalties that will be available from the on-line sales at the History Press £46.29 in due course.
Gosport Society Enquires via our Gosport Society Web Page.
We have received a number of enquiries, mostly concerning information relating to family history enquires.
Angela Miles – researching the Buzzo family.
Fran Box – requesting confirmation of the date of a photo in our photo archive of Gosport Watermen (plate 1031). We claimed it was 1880, however, whilst researching Ancestry.com we can prove the father and son depicted in the photogragh were residents in Beech Street in the 1851 Census, the date of the photo therefore being 1843. (as claimed by Gosport Library).
Cliff Trethewey – requested information about North Street Gosport, a family member living there in 1849/50. A copy of a missing street layout was provided with photos of retained buildings that have survived.
Lesley Tinman– requested information of Seafield, advice has been given.
Wessex Archaeology (Salisbury) – requested advice on the Monckton Hutments and Haslar Barracks. Richard Harrison kindly provided information for them.
We have received some very kind letters of appreciation for Gosport Society’s help from those who made the enquiries.
