1St September 2024 11am Trinity Green Gosport.
Peace Treaty Signing at Bastion No1 (entrance gate adjacent former Rectory)
We would appreciate your company in joining us as we do not wish to be out-numbered by Portsmouth Society, it is rumoured they will arrive in an open top double decker bus.
Members of other local history societies have been invited, together with members of Marquess of Winchester’s Regiment of the English Civil War Society. It should be a colourful event!
The signing will take place promptly at 11-30am, with a ‘Town Crier’ announcing the arrangements.
The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth and The Worshipful Mayor of Gosport will be the first to sign the agreement.
An itinerary will be circulated earlier to the date.
Gosport Society’s Hon. Secretary enquiries.
Recent enquiries have been as follows.
- We received a donation from Howard Hiscox (£20) for the supply of photograph 3036 in Gosport Society’s archive, of the landing craft 1092, his father was the Coxswain.
- We supplied information to Sally Rogers from Deganwy, who requested information of the school her mother would have attended in the 1920/30’s, namely Grove Road Junior & Hasleworth School. Gosport
- Unfortunately, there were no volunteers to assist at St. Mary’s Rowner HODS event, however, we hope we have assisted by providing information, which was available from ‘The Discovery Centre’.
- An enquiry from Charles Ormond was received in connection with a chronometer pocket watch 1828, signed Farrel of Gosport’. Our archives do not record any information of the Farrel, we referred Charles to several web sites that mention ‘Farrel of Gosport’.
- A photograph of a US tank transport was received, claiming it to be in Gosport High Street. However, it appeared not to be the case, although a men’s outfitter, see copy of in the photo shows Rowe (Gosport) Ltd? Research is needed to see if Rowe had other outlets other than at 78 High Street.
- A letter of appreciation was received from Baycroft School, although we were unable to help at their ‘Fete’, we supplied a number of our publications.
Looking forward to seeing you all on the 1st September!
Kind regards,
Richard C. Gosport Society.
